As Curry Goes, So Does Davidson

Posted by 49ways on February 19, 2009

Player of the Year candidate, Stephen Curry, sat out of Wednesday night’s home loss to The Citadel Bulldogs with an ankle injury he suffered last Saturday against Furman.  The Citadel won 64-46.  Improbable outcome, or did you see this one coming?

I won’t go into the obvious here.  It is well known that Stephen Curry is an All-American.  He, alone, has catapulted the Davidson Wildcats onto the national scene.  Who can forget their Cinderella run in the Tournament last year?  They lost to eventual champion, Kansas, by two points in the Regional Finals.

But I have to tip my hat to The Citadel Bulldogs.  They are now 18-10 overall, and 13-4 in conference play.  The tiny military school in Charleston, South Carolina, is in the midst of a 10-game winning streak.  This is usually something that the Charleston Cougars or the Davidson Wildcats boast.  The Bulldogs wrap up their regular season with games against the bottom three teams in the Southern Conference South Division – Wofford, Georgia Southern, and Furman.  In my opinion, if Curry doesn’t get healthy for their last three conference games, The Citadel has a great chance to win the Southern Conference regular season.

This weekend pits two of college basketball’s best mid-major teams against each other in the 2009 BracketBuster event as the Butler Bulldogs visit the Davidson Wildcats.  This is their opportunity to show the Selection Committee that they truly deserve a high seed or an at-large bid, should they lose their respective conference tournaments.  Gary Parrish of cbssportsline.com said it best: the pressure will be on for the loser of this game.  Davidson needs Curry more than anything right now.
